The New Craze in Gardening
Forget the backyard garden plot.
Forget buying fertilizer and watering daily. Weeding? It’s a thing of the past.
The gutter! It’s the new craze in gardening. No need to water. Great access to sunlight. Low up-keep! I am going GREEN!
A few weeks ago, I looked upward when walking into my house and noticed green leaves sticking out of the gutters, like this:
At first, I thought that a bunch of branches must have blown into the gutters. But days passed and the leaves were still just as green and just as alive.
I started pestering my husband. Throwing hints around. He swore that it wasn’t as bad as it looked. How could it be that bad? We just cleaned them out!
I began looking at the gutters on every house that I passed by. No green leaves sticking out of anyone else’s (except for our two neighbors).
Last week, I finally broke down and took a picture of the gutters and threatened to borrow a ladder and clean them out myself if it wasn’t taken care of soon. I can just see the headlines:

The pressure payed off. CandyMan borrowed a ladder and climbed up. And then climbed back down. It was worse than we had expected. He went back up with a shovel and started the process.
Dark brown composted leaves with thriving weeds growing throughout. It was packed in.
If only my tomatoes were doing that well.
Can you imagine…..Dinner time rolls around.
“Hunnie! I need some lettuce. Maybe a cucumber or two for the salad.”
“Okie-dokie–I’ll go UP and get some!”
A little background on our gutter garden: we cleaned our gutters last season. I swear. Then we had an incredibly rainy, windy Spring. We do have trees in our front yard, but NONE in our backyard, and our back gutters were just as bad.
Someday I will laugh about the roof top garden.
Except that I made it all up. Yeah, that’s the story.
