Bring Out the Lab Coats!
This week, Team Mom and two of Elmer’s all-new science kits, Weird World of Water and Magnificent Manicure Kit, provided hours of fun for me and my kids.
My kids can tell you that science is all around us, from the food they eat to the soaps and lotions they use (because they listen at school!). The difference is that they rarely get to do something this cool at school.
The girls and I (minus my tom-boy Necco) started off with the Manicure Kit. The kit came with a very detailed instructions as well as everything we needed to turn our house into a day spa! We were all so amazed by the crystal mud that we got the boys involved, too. The booklet contains lots of fun facts and questions, including information on crystal mud, which we learned can hold more than 300 times its mass in water (it’s the same stuff that’s inside disposable diapers….eww!). Everyone was oohing and ahhing. Loved it.
Oh, and by the way–The magnificent Manicure Kit recently was named 2009 Toy of the Year in Creative Child Magazine in the Educational Toys category. It’s available at Toys R Us nationwide for $19.99.
Next, we headed outside for a Mythbuster’s Weird World of Water experiment. The Mythbusters kits contain several trial and error hands-on activities. This kit recently won the FamilyFun Magazine 2009 T.O.Y. award. It is available nationwide at Toys R Us, Target, and Walmart.
We started off with the Pantry Projectile. Sound like fun yet? We combined a plastic one-liter bottle, balsa wood, baking soda, vinegar, and a few other components to create a back-yard rocket. We did have to endure quite a bit of trial and error…..but we had so much fun doing it. Instead of taking pictures, I captured some of our trial and error onto video:
As you can tell, they invented their own way of making the rocket work. It was hilarious to watch. Both kits were lots of fun, and there are still hours of fun left in them. So much more to do! Thanks, Elmer’s!
