This is No Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, I woke up at a decent hour and got kids ready for school.

Once upon a time, four of my kids happily marched off to school and I was left at home with my youngest.

Once upon a time, I ran errands at the store, took AJ to the Resource Center, and met friends for preschool.

Once upon a time, mail was delivered to our mail box. Garbage was picked up on garbage day. Once upon a time.

Once upon a time, my husband went to work in the morning and came home at night.

Once upon a time, I had a car, I had a schedule, and I had a life.

Now I have snow.

Snow and more snow.

If you didn’t think the last few days’ pictures were bad enough, look at what I caught today. Not only did we have another foot of snow, but we had wind.

Blizzard of 2010

Amazingly, we maintained our power.

Even more amazingly, we have maintained our sanity.

Sick of wearing Winter clothes!

Um….most of us, at least.

My new reality is sleeping in and lounging around in sweatshirts and no make up. School? What school? My world is my little house, my family, and my computer.

I’m afraid I won’t know how to handle myself once we can leave the house to do anything other than shovel snow again.

In happier news, we have discovered that even though the snow plows, postal service, garbage collectors, and city buses can’t make it to our street during a blizzard, the Tooth Fairy still can!

Tooth Fairy visits during blizzard

Reese lost both of her front teeth this week. And despite the note she left for the Tooth Fairy after the second tooth fell out (“Tooth Fairy, Please leave me $7.”) she still got a few quarters and a dime. The Tooth Fairy might have trusty transportation, but she’s still cheap around here. I just started a discussion in my Forum about what a typical Tooth Fairy pays these days.

Now she looks so grown up with those missing teeth! I remember her a little older than my boys tagging along with you in the nursing room at church. *sniff* Times flies!

We’re still Tooth Fairy virgins over here…no lost teeth yet. But I was planning on 50 cents…might up that to a dollar for the front teeth.

Today was better weather, huh? Did you get your car out?

Yes! Today was beautiful weather! A lot of our snow melted. But, alas, the growing pile of snow behind our van is not going anywhere until a snow plow decides to show itself on our court. There’s no way I’m going to shovel a 6-foot-high pile of snow out of the way. Even if it means I can leave my house. :(

My daughter is especially glad that the tooth fairy made it through the storm. Thank goodness I didn’t have to break her the news that the tooth fairy couldn’t fly in a blizzard! ;)

Can’t wait to see the discussion about the tooth fairy. My son has six loose teeth right now and this tooth fairy is starting to sweat haha!!

Wow! You are really and truly snowed in! We got snow, but ours isn’t unmanageable, and no matter what our plows reach us. We are in the lake effect band in S.W. Michigan and it can get quite bad, but we are used to it around here.

Good luck retaining your sanity in the face of all of that snow! (Oh. Is that not helpful?!) haha :D

  12. I’m jealous of all the snow. I live in New England and have been looking out the window at gray and dirty, not fluffy and white! We we supposed to get pummeled yesterday and got barely a dusting.
I remember those days of wearing shorts in the Winter…

Isn’t it funny that it seems that areas that normally get a bunch of snow have had less this year, while places like MD/DC are getting hit hard?

  14. I cannot believe how much snow the MD, DC, and VA area has gotten this year. I think 1996 was the last huge snowstorm up there. It’s crazy. Glad you guys are hanging in there and that you have power!!! Love the missing teeth pic. That is too funny she asked for $7. Last time I heard, the going rate was a dollar per tooth. :)

    [Reply]

    Lolli Reply:

Yep, she was just feeling really hopeful. I didn’t even give her a whole dollar per tooth. :)
