What a Difference a Year Makes

9 February 2010 1 views 29 Comments

A year ago today, AJ and I were playing outside at the park. Without our coats on. That, my friends, is a normal February day in Maryland.

Park play day in February

The crazy weather we’ve had this week is not normal.

February 2010 Maryland snow storm

Tonight, the snow is falling once again. By tomorrow night, there should be another 15-or-so inches on top of the 30 we’ve already gotten. The 30 inches that still have not been properly cleaned up. But, don’t let me get started on that.

This could have been a nightmarish week. The kids are having an unexpected Winter Break in February. A Winter Break that happens to be just as long as the original one around the holidays. We could be miserable. But somehow we’re not. Somehow we’re enjoying each other, being lazy, and not going anywhere.

Once the kids head back to school on Tuesday of next week (yes, schools are closed for another week) they will have had a nine-day weekend, as KitKat has called it.

The kids are enjoying the time off. Watching lots of Little House on the Prairie, playing with neighbor friends, having sleep overs in the middle of the week. It’s like a free-for-all.

They even decorated a gingerbread house and ate it as soon as they were done. They were thrilled. (Truthfully, they just wanted to eat all of the candy without making the house, but I told them they had to at least put it together. I just didn’t make them keep it up)

gingerbread house

Tonight, Necco is sleeping over at a friend’s house, AJ and KitKat are having a “sleepover” in the basement, and Twizzler and Reese are having a sleepover in Twizzler’s room. Me? I think it’s time for a homemade smoothy.

While you’re here, go check out my guest post on From the Trenches of Motherhood. I tell a funny story about traveling (locally!) with young children.

Happy Wordful Wednesday!

So, is snow better in bulk too? I’ve never seen so much snow in my life and I’m only looking at pictures.

With all the school your kids have off, what does that mean for your summer vacation? Does it have to start late now?

That’s exactly what it’s going to mean. Less summer! We haven’t heard the official word, but I’m assuming that we’re looking at June 18th at the earliest (June 15 was supposed to be the last day). And who knows if we’ll get more snow days to make it even longer!

Sadly, that is not my car. You can see a picture of how buried my car was before I shoveled it out here: http://betterinbulk.net/2010/02/who-needs-snow-plows.html

    It’s really, really sad!

I’m glad you are surviving this. Still shaking my head over the sheer amount of snow you have and are getting. What kind of smoothy did you make?

Your comment didn’t get eaten! It came though.

I got downstairs to the kitchen and was so cold I opted for hot chocolate instead of a smoothy. If I had made a smoothy, it would have contained OJ, vanilla yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, and a banana.

    Tomorrow, for sure!

Oh boy, we don’t have school until (possibly) next Tuesday. And we’re supposed to get more snow on Monday, so we might not make it on Tuesday, either. It’s insane!!

There’s the drawback to homeschooling…can I get away with a snow day? We’re getting 20+ inches tonite & tomorrow. UGH!

Looks like you’ve been having a great time being home together. Nothing better than cozy days in the house, tucked under blankets watching movies together… :)

I have been thinking about my homeschooling friends! I must say that it’s nice to be stuck inside with no responsibilities, but it does get a little boring after a while!

What else is there to do but play on the computer (days that we have power, at least)?? Yes, it was recommended that I reduce the size of my header, and although I am not quite as fond of it, I’m hoping it will grow on me. All for the good of the blog, right?

You haven’t gotten all the emails? Yes, the quorum of the 12 officially cancelled conference for this weekend. No church. No nothing.

We got a VERY QUICK sweep of our court, but mostly we dug ourselves out. I am still stuck. I didn’t want to tackle the 10 foot wide by 6 foot high wall behind my van.
