Nature Sense Walk
I’m breaking from March’s Fishful Thinking Resilience theme because I felt compelled to go on a Nature Sense Walk with AJ this week.
We’re spending more time outside, the kids are stretching those Winter-tired muscles, and I am enjoying letting some fresh air into the house.
Earlier this week, as AJ and I were walking back home from the elementary school after dropping the other kids off for the day, I was overwhelmed by the evidences of Spring. And, in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, we decided to make our walk home into a “green” Nature Sense Walk. We looked around for everything green. First, we noticed the obvious: grass, leaves, needles, plants. Then we started seeing green everywhere! Shutters, mail boxes, power boxes, cars, street signs. Suddenly (when we opened our eyes to it!) green was everywhere! I even handed AJ a camera and we took turns taking pictures of green things together.
After we’d exhausted the green, I had AJ close his eyes and concentrate on the sounds around us. He heard birds, wind, cars, foot steps. He held tightly to my hand, with full trust in Mommy, as I led him blindly down the path to our house.
It was a good walk. A little longer than our normal walk home, maybe, but good. Satisfying. AJ and I were reminded once again that there is so much to appreciate. So much to notice. We just have to open our eyes (or sometimes close our eyes!) to notice them.

What a sweet post. You know AJ will remember this. My kids (now grown) remember their walks with my mom around the neighborhood when she used to babysit them. They learned different things like what you taught AJ during your walk. You’re making memories and it’s sweet that you’re sharing ‘em.
Can’t wait for full blown Spring. We got 77degrees yesterday and about the same today
Can you believe you were just taking those crazy snow pictures recently?

What a great idea. It’s amazing what you can find once you start looking for it. I can’t wait until my little man gets older so we can do things like this.

Sometimes, we need to quiet the senses… it’s something I learned in Yoga, and I think it carries true through so many things in life.
What a great walk.. and a great lesson.

Gorgeous pictures! I think this is a great reminder that we all need to “stop and smell the roses”. I personally tend to get so caught up in what I need to get done that I forget that my boyz will only be this age once! They would love for me to actually go WITH THEM and explore in our backyard woods. So thanks to you, and to Fishful Thinking, for inspiring me to drop the vacuum and the dustcloth and to just SAVOR and EXPLORE!
