I got an iPhone this week.

when kids don't smile for the camera

I was able to find a great deal on a used iPhone 3g and a friend of mine had mentioned her success in using an unlocked iPhone with T-Mobile, who has been my carrier for the last 6 years or so. I was thrilled to get the phone, although unlocking it was not without some challenges (in other words, I just about pulled out my hair until I finally decided to take the phone down to the mall and talk with a guy at the T-Mobile kiosk. After an hour with that employee and another 30 minutes on the phone with another T-Mobile customer service rep, I was all set to go.

I am loving it.

I happened to get my new iPhone on National Pancake Day. We decided at the last minute (ie- 5:55pm) to head over to IHOP to take advantage of the free stack of pancakes per person. For a family of seven a free meal like that is a deal that’s hard to pass up. After 45 minutes of standing in a very crowded lobby with many, many teenagers, AJ was crying that he was “so hungry,” CandyMan was complaining that this had been a big mistake (grumble, grumble), and Reese was begging to be able to order something other than pancakes.

I was trying to enjoy the pancakes and the night off from cooking. I have to admit, despite the long wait, the grumbling family members, the very cramped seating arrangements (they tried to fit six of us in a 4 person booth), and the fact that we ran out of syrup twice, I really did enjoy my pancakes.

Sadly, the pancakes did not sit well with my stomach and my rumbling tummy led to a night full of strange dreams about being pregnant and needing to get to the hospital to deliver the baby.

No one has asked for pancakes the rest of the week.

My iPhone, on the other hand? Everyone is asking for it. And considering the kids’ recent misplacement of my iTouch in the laundry, I am guarding this phone very closely. No one but ME gets this thing!

I’m amazed at the unlocking of phones. its seems so “mysterious”…I have a cool t-mobile phone that i got for review that i would love to have work on verizon. not sure it can be done and not sure who to ask! maybe i should hit the verizon store :)

Unfortunately, T-Mobile and Verizon operate on different systems, so their phones are not interchangeable. T-mobile is on the same system as AT&T, so that’s why so many T-Mobile customers have been able to unlock AT&T phones and vice versa. So you won’t be able to use the fancy phone you got for review with Verizon. :(

I am loving it. Although, honestly, since I’m home most of the day it’s pretty much the same as having my iTouch with me all the time. The difference is that I don’t have to carry the iTouch and a phone around. :)

  7. WOW! I never knew you could do that to the iPhone! I have T-mobile and LOVE their customer service. We have used them from the beginning of our cell phone adventures (try about 9 years. I am in need of a new phone so I may just have to try that.

Such troopers to wait so long for the pancakes, but a free night from cooking for lots of mouths, just might be worth it. :)

You should look around for a used iPhone. It’s working great, and I was so happy that T-Mobile was so supportive of me bringing the iPhone over on my plan. :)

  8. Love my unlocked iPhone on T-mobile. I had NO idea it would take that long to unlock, though. The guy who did mine just did it in a 10 minutes or so while I watched with a giddy smile on my face!! I am sure you will enjoy yours! Love the photo of you are your son. Are those bunny ears in the background? Totally seems like something my girls would do to me ;)!!

LOL! You noticed the bunny ears! Yes, that was my soon-to-be 8 year old daughter trying to get in the picture.

As far as unlocking goes, I’m sure it only took a minute or two for him to do, but he had other customers, so he told me to leave it and come back in an hour. :)

  9. We went to IHOP too! It was pretty crowded, but since it was for a good cause, it was worth it. Sorry about your rumbling tummy. Reminds me of that Bill Cosby episode where he eats that huge sub right before bed. Remember that one? haha :)

And, the iphone. I have a want for it, but I think it’s some peer envy, right?

But, I sure want a Mac!

  15. Look at you taking photos of food with your new phone! Very cool! I know you’ve said before you don’t like taking photos of food because you’re never happy with the results, but you and your new iphone did a nice job!

We celebrate Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, which is next week! WOOHOO! Can you guess what my photo will be next Friday? ;-)

Since you’re featuring a foodie photo this week, I would LOVE for you to link and play along in our Friday Food Fight. :-)

So, the T-Mobile people actually helped you unlock the iPhone? Wow! That’s customer service :)

I know. I was shocked. I figured that they’d want to turn their heads and pretend I wasn’t talking to them. Instead, they were so helpful and even thanked me for bringing such a good phone to my plan (in other words, not leaving them for AT&T or Verizon).

Yes! I have been using my iTouch religiously for over a year, but I was always frustrated with my phone when I tried to use it for anything other than making a call. On second thought, my old phone wasn’t great for that, either.

  19. In my house it would be me that should stay away from the iPhone. I’m notoriously bad with cell phones. I swear I just looked at Jon’s the wrong way and now it won’t work.

I didn’t want to drag the kids out to a restaurant even if it WAS free (we’re crazy enough at home with the two extras here), so we just made pancakes for dinner that night. It wasn’t as cool, but it worked.

Haha! My kids just want to play. And they tend to lose things. Heck, we all lose thing left and right. One of the first things I did when I got the iphone was install the “Find my iphone” app, as recommended on twitter when I lost the iTouch.

  20. I prefer waffles to pancakes and my husband definitely would not go for crowds and waiting in line!

The iPhone on the other hand is something that we would both love. Maybe sometime!

    [Reply]

I definitely prefer waffles as well, and I almost always prefer my homemade waffles to any others. Free, on the other hand, almost always gets me.

And I am loving the iphone!!
