I was talking about a favorite Spring-time dessert last week during my Easter Entertaining Live Chat in the CoffeeTalk Community on the BlogFrog, and promised that I would share the recipe here after the holiday. After eating a bowl of Wonderful for a before-lunch snack this morning, I remembered my promise. You will thank me later, I swear!
This dessert is an old family favorite, and was often present at family gatherings and holiday meals when I was growing up. We appropriately called it Wonderful.
Crust
Mix together:
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 3 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 1/2 sticks (12 Tbsp) butter or margarine (melted)
Press into the bottom of a 9×13″ pan. Bake at 350 degrees and then let cool.
Layer 1
Mix together:
- 1 package cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/2 package cool whip
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Spread over cooled crust and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Layer 2
Mix one large package of chocolate instant pudding according to package directions and pour over cheese mixture. Refrigerate for another 30 minutes.
Layer 3
Spread the rest of the cool whip on top of the pudding and garnish with chopped nuts, if desired. Keep in the refrigerator.

This is our family’s favorite dessert! I make it without the brown sugar though. I’ll have to give that a try!

I love this dessert, but I’ve only ever heard it called Sex in a Pan, which was fine before I had kids, and now I just call it “Yummy Chocolate Dessert”, which is a bit vague.

We call that pudding cake at my house. It’s my brother’s favorite and my grandmother always makes my brother’s favorites when he’s in town.
