Two weeks ago today I was on the road to Asheville, NC for Type A Parent Conference. I am lucky that my job as a blogger right here, a photographer at home, and editor at 5 Minutes for Mom allows me to do what I love everyday. I get to write, share, and socialize with amazing women all week long.
But it’s not every day that I get to hang out with those incredible friends face to face. So much of the relationship building that I do everyday is through email. It’s amazing to me how well you can get to know a person through their writing.
My online jobs also allow me to be home with my kids (although they will probably complain that I am busier now than I ever have been). Now that I have a few “older” kids, I love that we are also building relationships through email.
When I wake up every morning, I roll over and reach for my iPhone to check the emails that have come through over night. On my first morning in Asheville, I scrolled through my emails and found one that had come from KitKat, my oldest daughter, who had just finished her freshman year of high school the week prior to Type A. I clicked on the email to open it.
This is the message I found:
I got straight a’s!!!!!!!!!!
89.7 in algebra 2 and physics!!!!!
I am sooooo happy!
I told Janice, my roommate, that I was more excited that KitKat wanted to share her news with me while I was away than I was about the exciting news that the email contained.
Email has connected me with my teenage daughter at a time when most kids don’t want anything to do with their parents. I am thrilled that email has opened up another line of communication for me and my kids.
I love that this short video from Yahoo! Mail totally speaks to this issue of connecting parents and kids.
How has email helped YOU build relationships?
