You know the old idea that kids are often more interested in playing with a box than with what’s inside the box? I had one of those experiences this past week with the dry ice inside a package of Blue Bunny ice cream that was delivered for Necco’s birthday. We hid the ice cream away in the freezer so we wouldn’t devour it right away (because, honestly, that’s what we do…) and THEN they discovered the dry ice.
Having worked in catering, I know a few little tricks with dry ice and I’ve shared some of them with the kids. They love to make a “witch’s potion” by adding just a little bit of water to the container of dry ice, and then watching the dry ice bubble and steam.
But they didn’t know until this week that regular juice will turn into carbonated juice if you drop a few pieces of dry ice inside the cup. They took so much homemade soda out to the neighbor kids that the other kids offered to pay per cup.
The neighbors, who apparently don’t get as many refrigerated packages as we do, thought the bowls of “witch’s potion” were incredible.
I was just happy to see the kids outside and occupied…
Note: These are definitely not my “best shots” of the week, but I already posted about my breakfast press conference with Michelle Obama and Disney CEO Robert Iger. I figured I’d bring you down to my “normal” – it’s not all glamor around here!
