As much as I loved our two days in Boston (still more pictures to share about that!) my favorite part of Massachusetts by far was our morning spent hiking and exploring at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, MA (close to Gloucester, where my mother in law’s family is from).
We found the parking lot easily but were a little surprised because we could tell pretty quickly that we were nowhere near the ocean. None of us realized that we had to walk quite a ways down a tree-lined path, around an old quarry-turned lake, past a breathtaking Lookout Point, and then a little further still before reaching the ocean.
The weather couldn’t have been more ideal on our day at Halibut Point. The skies were blue and completely clear, and the air temperature was unusually comfortable for a day in late July. We were especially grateful after our 2 1/2 days of rain previous to that.
If you’re ever in the Boston area, I highly recommend the hour-or-so drive down to Cape Ann and Halibut Point State Park. Bring your camera for awe-inspiring photos and wear comfortable shoes; the rocks down by the water can be a little difficult to navigate in flip-flops. Personal experience speaking on this one.
I’d recommend arriving early (we had the place to ourselves for the first hour or more when we got there a little after 9:00 am) and pack a lunch. There is an abundance of smooth, flat rocks farther away from the water that give and amazing view. It’s serene and absolutely gorgeous, and the kids could have spent hours and hours exploring the tide pools and rocks and building their own little rock garden. And at a whopping $2 to park your car, it’s an almost-free day of family fun. Can’t beat that!
I was just grateful to have brought my super-zoom (though, admittedly, it was difficult to maintain my balance on the rocks with my enormous camera and lens throwing me off balance) because I was able to catch some fun shots of a fisherman catching lobster nearby.
Have you ever been to Rockport or Halibut Point? I personally can’t wait to go back again.
