Disney is on fire this year! I thought it would be fun to give you guys a sneak peek of a brand new animated film coming out this November. It sounds exactly like the kind of family-friendly film that my boys (especially) will love. Here’s a little about the movie:

Big Hero 6 is an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion — a robot named Baymax — Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Big Hero 6 is inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and features comic-book style action.

I love these early images from Big Hero 6:

BRIDGE TO SAN FRANSOKYO – Concept art showcases an iconic bridge and treasured landmark of the high-tech, fast-paced city of San Fransokyo.

SAN FRANSOKYO AT NIGHT – Pictured in concept art, the high-tech city of San Fransokyo is home to brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his team of first-time crime fighters.

Are your kids excited for Big Hero 6? My kids and I are eager to see this unique CG animated film set in a city that is apparently a mash up of San Francisco and Tokyo. The video is incredible (see if you can spot Wreck it Ralph – hint: look on the left).

As a mom (one, in particular, who has absolutely no sense of style…) I was so proud to see my oldest daughter all fancied up for Prom last weekend. To say that she was stunning on her dress and up-do (courtesy of my sister) is a huge understatement.

I don’t think these prom pictures even require any more explanation than that…

This post has been sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, in the form of a new bed (yay!). No monetary compensation has been received and, as always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Did you know that May is Better Sleep Month? Now, that is a holiday I can truly embrace. When was the last time you got consistently good sleep, where you slept sufficient hours at night and woke up refreshed and not sore or tired?

I’m guessing that the last time I had consistently good sleep and enough of it was when I was a child. As a teen, I stayed up late doing homework and woke up extra early to go to a before-school religion class. Then I was off to college (does anyone get enough sleep in college?) and soon on to married life while still living the college life. I went straight from college to being a mom, and everyone knows that moms with babies don’t get enough sleep.

My babies are grown enough now that I technically don’t have a good excuse for not getting enough sleep, other than the fact that I have developed a habit and fallen into a rut. This month I took a sleep survey, answering some basic questions about my sleep environment and habits – and I was both ashamed at times and surprised by some of my answers. Here are a few of the points from the sleep survey (and a few “better sleep red flags”) that stood out to me…

My sleep habits and environment:

I go to sleep around 11:30 pm each night – sometimes later, but rarely any earlier. I wake up at 5:50 am 5 days a week and sleep in until 8 or 9:00 am on the weekends.

I work in my room. I know that having my bed right next to my work desk/computer is a big no-no, but I don’t have another room to put my office.

Some of my most productive work is at night, after 9:30 (ie, after the kids have gone to bed). While I am often tired after dinner, I get a boost of energy and motivation because I am so productive in the evening hours. I have a hard time shutting my brain down for the night.

I keep my iPad and cell phone on my nightstand at night. Checking emails and statuses are usually the last AND the first things I do each day.

I’ve got chargers and an alarm clock that all let off blue or green lights in my room.

I like sleeping with the windows open and often have nature and street noises and lights coming in through my windows (have you ever noticed how bright the moon is?).

I prefer sleeping with some kind of white noise (fan, humidifier, or sound machine). Silence makes my mind go to over-time AND I notice the snoring more. Yes, there’s snoring, too.

The result? I am often tired. I crave naps and hit a wall in the afternoon where I am not productive in my work at all. I don’t exercise enough (I’d rather sleep when I really should be going to the gym).

Within the next week, I’ll be receiving a plan with personalized feedback about my sleep habits from registered nurse and sleep health and wellness professional, Terry Cralle. I admit that I’m a little scared to hear what she has to say about my bedtime routine, my lack of hours in bed, and especially about my bedroom home office space.

As hard as it is to make changes, though, I do recognize that a comfortable and restful night’s sleep (that includes plenty of solid hours in bed) makes a huge difference in productivity, mood and over-all health. When I do, on occasion, get enough sleep, I have more energy and use my time more efficiently. While I know that this is the case, it’s still hard to make changes in my routine. I know I’m not alone in this!

Shopping for a new mattress

About a week ago, we headed out to a local Sleepy’s location to pick out the perfect mattress. The Sleepy’s employee who guided us to the right mattress was so helpful. We started out by taking their Bed Match “test” which helped the Sleepy’s mattress professional find the right kinds of mattresses to show us. In selecting a mattress, she said there are a few basic questions to kick off your search. First, what size mattress? Then, what type of mattress (spring, foam, air, combos)? And, lastly, what sort of mattress top (pillow top, plush, Euro top)?

I am personally drawn to pillow top mattresses (our helper described my preference as “marshmallow beds”). She had us lay on several mattresses for several minutes each, and she pointed out that typically when a customer has found the right bed, she knows it before they do because she can sense it in their face and body language. When you find a bed that fits your body and sleeping preferences, your body instantly relaxes.

Making the final decision was not easy, but Sleepy’s was incredibly helpful in coming to our final choice.

I’m hoping that implementing the personalized tips and suggestions from the Sleep Professional along with the better sleep from sleeping on a new mattress will transform my sleep. I’ll be reporting back in a few weeks to let you know how it has been going.

Established in 1979, the Better Sleep Council (BSC) is a non-profit organization supported by the mattress industry. The BSC is devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep to good health and quality of life and about the value of the mattress and sleep environment in pursuit of a good night’s sleep.

Often, people will make everything else a priority before sleep, but sleep on a quality mattress is quite literally the foundation to be at our best each and every day. It is the BSC’s goal to “wake up” the world, and awaken them to the importance of sleeping 7-8 hours on a comfortable, supportive mattress. We all know how it feels after a bad night’s rest, and conversely, how we feel after sleeping great!

Note: I received an early copy of The Body Electric by Allie Duzett for review, which is officially released today (May 14, 2013). No compensation was received and all opinions expressed are my own.

When I first moved into this area, I met a mother with older kids that I admired. As a young mother with one toddler and a second baby on the way, I couldn’t imagine accomplishing as much as this mother did. I was in awe. I didn’t get to know her kids very well, and we lost touch after a while, but I’ve seen them around through the years and every once in a while I see her oldest daughter, now married with a toddler herself.

The other night, I went out with a local friend of mine who is in the process of writing a parenting book. I’ve been helping her for the last few years (in the form of regular “book meetings” at our favorite restaurants). We’ve been gathering research, reading over drafts and organizing interview notes. This latest meeting was a culmination of sorts, bringing her research full-circle.

The night really did come full-circle when Allie Duzett walked up to the table. She was one of the daughters of that mother I had met so many years ago, and apparently my author-friend was also impressed by her impressive mothering skills as she was the first person to be interviewed for her book. How fitting that her daughter would join us to be interviewed at the end of the project.

After we were done talking about parenting stuff, Allie happened to mention that she was an author, with her first published book – The Body Electric – coming out in a few weeks. I was eager to read her story, so we hooked up after the dinner meeting and she sent a copy of the book for me to review.

What got me excited to read Allie’s first novel, other than the fact that I love reading books written by people I know, was this article by the publisher, Istoria Books.

“…I do think there’s a place–an important place–for YA fiction that does not focus on what’s wrong in a teen’s world, for stories that make readers feel good about themselves and perhaps even affirm the good choices they are making.

These are the kinds of YAs Istoria Books is looking for.

That kind of “clean” YA fiction doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, this spring Istoria Books is proud to release a sweet and fun YA, The Body Electric by Allie Duzett, that doesn’t include a single curse or reference to sex or substance abuse. It’s a rollicking journey to the “end of the world,” an exploration of young love and ancient curses. It’s the exact opposite of boring. But it doesn’t have a single element in it that would make a parent cringe.” – Libby Sternberg

I personally have a hard time reading books with too much language. I don’t swear myself, and prefer not to have to listen to (or think about it) more than I have to. As a mother with three teens at home, I am overly sensitive to YA books that make me blush…and I admit I have cringed thinking of my kids reading the same thing.

I finished The Body Electric in two days. At 231 pages, it’s not short, but also not too long. The end of the book left me craving more (luckily, Allie is busily working on the next book in the series, Surge Protector). I spent the good part of Mother’s Day camped out on the couch, devouring the book.

I’m happy to say that I feel completely comfortable passing the book on to my almost-14-year-old daughter, Necco (who I know will enjoy the romance) or to my 12-year-old-son (who absolutely EATS UP anything having to do with mythology). I just won’t tell my son that the book involves kissing and let him concentrate on the monsters.

About The Body Electric

Genre: YA fantasy romance

Official book description: Lena Clark, a small-town teenager, falls for a stranger with a mysterious past—and a frightening present. Before she knows it, she is a target, wrapped up in his quest to escape the wrath of a jealous queen from a world Lena never believed existed… Lena Clark’s high school world comes crashing apart when she discovers that the most popular jock in school—her boyfriend!—has been cheating on her. In the aftermath of the drama, she meets Zach Zuson, a newcomer so her small Colorado town. It’s clear that he’s different: it’s in the way he talks, and the way he moves, and the way he looks at her as if he’s hiding something. And then, it’s in the way he singlehandedly strangles a full-grown mountain lion to death right before her eyes. Next thing you know, an ancient monster is attacking them.

Suddenly, life for Lena is a lot more complicated than she ever imagined it could be. When Zach decides to put an end to the attempts on his life for once and for all, Lena gets dragged along, eventually ending up alone at the party of the century. Little does she know that this party is attended by bloodthirsty killers, or that a jealous queen has made Lena a target, too. Now Lena must find the strength to survive.

About Allie Duzett

Allie Duzett is a wife, mother, musician, and writer with a passion for YA. The Body Electric is her debut novel. She lives with her husband and baby in Maryland (but is seriously considering a move to Texas). She is deeply ashamed of her love for Goldfish crackers (cheddar, of course), which persists despite her commitment to real food, whole grains, and juicing. Even though she spends most of her time these days mothering and writing novels and music, her actual college degree is in environmental soil science, or in other words, “dirt.” She prefers writing fiction to analyzing soil samples for humus content.

You can read more about her at allieduzett.blogspot.com, where she blogs all her secrets.

Or at least some of them.

I particularly like her 3 tips for writing with a toddler. I may not have a toddler anymore, but sometimes older kids and teens can be just as demanding…

Allie is not only a mother of a toddler and a published author, but she’s got another one on the way (a baby AND a book). Still, she manages to maintain a goal of writing 2000 words a day on her next book. Something a blogger like myself can really relate to…

The Body Electric can be purchased at Amazon.com in paperback or kindle edition.

I am a #NintendoEnthused Nintendo brand ambassador and received a Wii U console, games, and everything needed to throw a great Wii U party. No other compensation was received, but affiliate links are used within this post. All thoughts and photos are my own.

I am not typically a party-thrower. I love attending parties - eating the food, chatting with friends, playing games, dancing, the whole nine yards – but I am not a fan of being in charge. It just doesn’t come naturally to me. Last month, my friends at Nintendo made it easy for me to throw one of the best family parties I’ve ever been to, all thanks to the Wii U and some awesome Nintendo representatives who led us in games and brought some delicious foods.

(I mean, look at that fruit platter. And the Chipotle burritos? You wish you’d been there, too…right?)

Our party was not all about the food, though. The Wii U was the star of the show for sure.

About a week before the party, a new Wii U console and 3 games arrived in the mail. The kids and I experimented with the games and new features of the Wii U before the party unveiling, but even we discovered some amazing (and sometimes surprising) new Wii U features.

Wii U Games featured at our party:

Nintendo Land – (included in the Wii U Deluxe Set package) is a fun and lively virtual theme park filled with games based on popular Nintendo “worlds.” Each attraction features unique game play experiences made possible by the Wii U GamePad controller. Throughout Nintendo Land, different games allow players to play solo, compete against other players, or even team up to play cooperatively. Up to 5 players can participate in incredibly fun (party friendly) multi-player modes in several of the games. There are 12 unique attractions featured in Nintendo Land, including Ninja Castle (my favorite), Pikmin Adventure, The Legend of Zelda Battle Quest, Fruit Cart, and the extremely popular Ghost Mansion.

The BEST part about Nintendo Land was the multi player mode. We had kids of all ages AND adults playing together, and my husband commented more than once how much he loved that we were playing with each other and not just against a computer. It brought the game play to a whole new and exciting level.

The new SiNG Party game was perfect for a party. Not only do you get the full karaoke experience, with words appearing on the GamePad for the singers to follow, but the rest of the party-goers can follow the dance moves on the big screen and follow along with singing certain parts. The best part about the way this was set up (with one or two singing and everyone else dancing and clapping on cue) was that those not singing didn’t have to awkwardly stand around listening to one person sing. Everyone was having fun at the same time.

Just take a look at my crazy husband and youngest daughter singing Love Shack together…
Up to five players can join in on the fun, with up to four using standard Wii remotes and one on the Wii U GamePad controlling things “behind the scenes.”

Wii U Highlights:

Video on Demand: Wii U owners can access their Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, or Netlix accounts as well as watch YouTube video.

Nintendo TVii: Nintendo TVii makes watching TV even more engaging (and simpler, too) by bringing together a program guide, remote control, and social interaction into one system. I love the second-screen TV watching experience (you can find out more about what you’re watching, learn about actors and actresses, etc). You can even comment on what you’re watching on live TV via Miiverse, Facebook, and Twitter.

Miiverse: Miiverse is a global community in which gamers from al over the world can share their experiences, discuss games, and learn more about the video games they’re playing. Through the Miiverse, you can challenge friends to play together, or reach out for help on a level you can’t figure out.

Wii U Chat: Wii U owners can video chat with each other using the built-in camera and microphone on the Wi U GamePad.

Internet Browser: Wii U transforms your TV into a browser so that you can surf the net from the comfort of your couch. You can actually browse the internet on the GamePad while someone watching still something on TV.

Meet the new Wii U GamePad:

It creates a “second window” into the video game world, thus removing the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV.

It also offers a new way for viewers to engage with their favorite entertainment.

The GamePad has a 6.2-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen, plus traditional button controls and two analog sticks. Inputs include a +Control Pad, L/R sticks, L/R stick buttons, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons, ZL/ZR buttons, Power button, HOME button, -/SELECT button, +/START button, and TV CONTROL button.

Includes motion control (powered by an accelerometer, gyroscope and geomagnetic sensor), a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, rumble features, a sensor bar, an included stylus and support for Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality.

Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and weighs approximately 1.1 pounds

I don’t have many (high) expectations for Mother’s Day. As long as I can get a nap (the height of luxury) and, if possible, avoid cooking all day, then I can end the day relatively satisfied.

Why is it, then, that I come to the end of most Mother’s Days feeling like a horrible, unappreciated mom?

Yesterday was going fairly well…It started with a dozen roses on Saturday night, and then I was ordered to stay in bed after my alarm went off while my husband and youngest son conspired to cook me a “surprise” breakfast (AJ was sorely disappointed when he discovered that Daddy had let the surprise slip when he asked me what I’d like for breakfast).

I had requested my no-fail waffles, but didn’t realize before hand that CandyMan had never made the batter. He made two fatal mistakes: he used only all purpose flour instead of mostly wheat and he added extra milk because the batter was too “thick.” They weren’t horrible, but they weren’t “my” waffles. The good part, though? I had a sit-down, hot breakfast with my whole family.

I opened my one (non-roses) present – candy (I really have to remember to tell them which candies I want next year!) – and tried not to dwell on the fact that only one of my five children bothered to do anything for Mother’s Day. Apparently, they’re all too old for making cute cards with hand prints on them.

Church went well, especially towards the end when the men took over all of the classes and gave all of the women 20 minutes to sit, chat, and enjoy cheesecake. We drove home and I got ready for my nap.

I hadn’t fallen asleep yet when AJ came up to the bedroom, climbed up to snuggle with me, and ended up staying for some one-on-one time. I was happy to have him. We made some last plans for his upcoming baptism and then he asked to play a game on my iPad.

“No, not right now,” I said, calmly.

“Yes! I want to play that game. You’re mean if you don’t let me play!”

Wow, that escalated quickly. But I stuck with my first answer. “No, I’m going to try to take my nap now. Why don’t you go downstairs and read.”

“I HATE you, Mommy! I hate you!”

I’ve been a mother for enough years that this phrase tends to make me roll my eyes rather than run to the other room crying. Yesterday, AJ got the eye roll…but I was instantly done with him interrupting my nap time.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t done.

“I hate you, Mommy,” he said as he grabbed a dollar bill off the desk and started scrunching it up in his hands. The money made my blood boil a bit and I hopped out of bed to stop him. He saw me coming and scooted quickly to his room, where he barricaded himself behind his door. I got the door open and demanded that he give me the dollar. Whining and yelling at me, he finally showed me where he had thrown it. I picked the dollar up about the same time that he picked up the basket full of clean, folded socks. Holding it high over his head, he threatened to dump it out.

At this point, all I could think about was how quiet the house was. Why in the world was no one coming to Mom’s rescue on Mother’s Day?

The socks did, indeed, get dumped. I grabbed him from his bed, where he had fled this time, and ordered him to pick them up. He refused and instead laid another big one on me:

“Why are you being so MEAN on Mother’s Day?”

I shot back with, “Shouldn’t I be the one asking that question?”

I gave up. I tried going to sleep, but my heart was pounding too fast for sleep to come, so I ended up reading a book instead. 10 minutes later, I walked downstairs, where I found AJ looking out the front window, waiting for Dad to come back from a Mother’s Day flower delivery to some other local moms.

Being a Mom is hard work. I love that we have a day to celebrate the moms in our lives, and I certainly love my own mom (and mother in law – I’ve been blessed). But I think Mother’s Day is too much pressure. I’m kind of glad I don’t have to go through Mother’s Day for another year.

Strawberries were on sale the other day (huge, dark red, beautiful strawberries) and I swear they were calling to me. I had a massive craving for strawberry shortcake, but didn’t have a lot of time to make cake to go with it, so I decided to try out shortcake waffles. They were incredible. Warm, sweet, soft-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside. And the best part? I could make one at a time as needed. Fresh shortcake anytime.

These shortcakes are delicious with the standard strawberries and whipped cream, but they’d also be fantastic with any other fruit or served warm with whipped cream alone.
