My kids headed back to school yesterday….all except one.

Reese was home sick (and will be again today) with a cough, stuffy nose, and fever. Unfortunately, from here on out (at least until Spring is in full force) I will no longer be able to make plans outside the house. Inevitably, during the Winter, if I make plans they will be canceled. With 5 kids attending public schools, someone is bound to bring home a bug.

vitamin C Chews Before we left for Florida, two of the kids had coughs. I was determined to avoid getting any kind of sickness on our trip, and so I started taking my Vitamin C super chews from Genesis Today, and knock on wood, I have now cared for sick kids and a sick husband for 2 weeks without getting so much as a sniffle. I love the taste of the citrusy vitamin C chews (CandyMan prefers the Acai chews) but even more I love the fact that I am feeling healthy!

Dr. Lindsay Duncan, the man behind Genesis Today, recently spoke about some foods that help combat the cold and flu and other nasty viruses that show up this time of year.

In review, Dr. Duncan recommends these foods to prevent and fight the cold and flu:

  • Take extra Vitamin C. Orange juice is great, but it has “only” 100% of your daily value of vitamin C. To fight off bugs, you want more than the daily recommended value.
  • Eat foods high in zinc, like nuts, oysters, and meats
  • Look for foods with glutathione, like avocado, asparagus, watermelon, and peaches. Not only is it an antioxidant, but bacteria actually “stick” to it.
  • Find foods rich in beta carotene (orange foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes)
  • The last tip from Dr. Duncan is to heat the body, just as a fever would do, to kill of the germs. He recommends taking a hot bath and then getting in bed under plenty of covers.

Please remember that I am not a doctor and Dr. Duncan says it so much better than I can.

What are your tips for getting through cold and flu season?

You can find Genesis Today products at Walmart and Walgreens. Check the store locator to find a store near your house. Plus, right now on the Genesis Today Facebook page, you can print off a buy one, get one coupon for Genesis Today juices.

Disclosure: I am a Genesis Today Superfood Ambassador, and received super chews and juices to test. Our family loves them (we especially love the new Omega Orange Juice). As an ambassador I will be occasionally sharing tips and reviews, but as always opinions are my own!

It’s interesting because my body actually craves those foods when I am sick. Now I know why:-)
