What I Miss About Vacation

I slept in this morning, as I like to do on New Years Day. Our New Years Eve celebrations included eating ice cream and watching movies in the comfort of our basement family room. Three of our five kids were scattered around town, and we simply enjoyed the quiet.

This morning, though, I was still tired when AJ woke me up for ice. Yes, he wanted ice at 8:00 in the morning. He’s been nursing a fever for the last few days and I suppose he was feeling warm.

After I got him cooled down, I fell asleep on the couch – a welcome treat in a household of seven. I woke up an hour and a half later feeling extremely disoriented. Not only had I dreamed about being late for church, but my brain incorporated the iTouch games and music I was hearing into my dreams.

We’ve only been home from our vacation for 3 days, and I’m wishing we could go back. Either that, or go back to school. Keeping kids busy at home while Daddy’s office is in the toy room is rough.

What I miss most about being on vacation:

Sleeping in every morning, and naps at any time of the day.

Naps on vacation

Walks on the beach. In sandals. And the sunset.

Walks on the beach

Uncles who entertain the kids.

Entertained children

Never having to hear the words, “Mommy, I’m bored!” or “Are we going to do anything today?”

Happy on vacation

I miss vacation, but what I’m really looking forward to is Monday and getting back to our routine. It’s been a wonderful break, full of memories, relaxation, and family time, but I’m ready for school to be back in!

  1. I love vacations for oh so many reasons. But like you I long for the comfort in routine. I’m heading out on a short vacay with hubby this weekend, but I’m really looking forward to getting back into our normal life again. It will be 4 weeks of chaos by the time things return to normal.

  2. Love your photos – it looks like a ton of fun! My husband and I were on vacation this past week – all my kiddos of my first set were gone for the holidays – 2 with their dad and the other lives in Las Vegas on her own(I have 21, 18, & 13 yr old daughters from my first marriage – and a 3 and 21 month old with my hubs). We did not plan on going anywhere while home this year and let me tell you, we were totally wiped out by today! A 3 yr old and 21 month old know how to chew you up and spit you out at our age (both 41). I think we would have been better off going someplace. I too am ready to get back into the usual routine.

I like your blog by the way!

  5. Man, I miss you your vacation too! This is the first holiday we’ve just stuck around the house in a long time. It has been nice but the kidlets are definitely getting a bit stir crazy. We’ll wake up 5am tomorrow morning for a ski day but other than that we’ve not done much at all! Your pics are fabulous… hang in there!

Enjoy your ski day tomorrow! With sick kids in the house, we’ll be having another day inside. Thank goodness the kids weren’t sick while we were in Florida!

I can’t complain, really. As much as I miss vacation and crave the regularity of our schedule, it’s nice to have some days at home where we can just hang out and not do anything in particular.

    Happy New Year, my friend!
