Missing Doug

13 January 2010 17 Comments

A week ago I wrote a post about losing Doug. Doug is more than Twizzler’s favorite toy. Doug accompanies him to friend’s houses, he helps him do his homework after school each day, and he keeps him company in bed every night.

Security object

Doug is still missing.

Yesterday, Twizzler couldn’t sleep. He came to my room, with tears in his eyes, and asked me what I thought had happened to Doug, and if he’d ever see him again.

It’s driving me crazy….I know he’s got to be here somewhere. I hate looking for things that I’ve lost, and lately I seem to be losing more than my fair share of things. Like a stinking lens for my camera. How can a person lose a lens?

I’m worried that Doug accidentally jumped into one of the Christmas boxes before we put them up in the attic. Or worse, that he was mistakenly put into one of the donation bags that we dropped off a week and a half ago. Someday, months from now, we might open up a bag or pull out a toy that doesn’t get much use and find Doug squished in the bottom. But that doesn’t help my little boy today.

“Mom, I feel like nobody else really cares that much about him and the fact that he’s lost.”

Sadly, it’s true. Doug means the world to Twizzler, but to everyone else he’s just a stuffed animal. It’s hard for my poor boy to see Doug that way, I think. To him, he’s just as real as the Velveteen Rabbit was to the boy in the classic story. Doug is his friend, and it is breaking my heart to see him mourning the loss of his friend.

What to do? Security objects just can’t be replaced, and that’s the danger of letting kids get attached to them. But no matter what WE do, they’ll get attached to something, anyway. Won’t they? Friends are often just as hard to replace when they leave, but somehow we do move on. Right? He’ll move on, even if we never find Doug. But today, he just misses him.

And that’s my current complaint.

So sorry to hear that. Last year, we lost the kids' special blankets while staying at a hotel. They must have gotten bundled up in the sheets or something and were never found. :( I was sick about it. But the kids actually got over it quicker than I thought they would. Still, I hope that Doug turns up.

So sad! I know what you mean about feeling sick about it. I feel sick about the possibility of Doug ending up in the Salvation Army pile. I'm still hopeful that we'll find him here, but of all places for him to end up…..so sad!

Oh my gosh Lolli! That is the absolute worst. Is there any way you can find a stuffed animal that looks exactly like Doug somewhere? Did you look on ebay? I feel so bad for him! Can you go to where you took the donations and browse thru their toys? Man! I will totally be thinking of your sweet son!

Oh no, poor Doug (and Twizzler, and you). I can not even imagine what would happen if we lost Bully, or Wizzy, or Mini, or Doggie, or Manny, or Worm, or Baby. Yes, #3 has no less than 7 nighttime security pals and he goes to sleep with his arms stretched widely around them all. Some mornings I can barely dig the kid out from under all of his stuffed friends. I've tried to remove a few of them from time to time, but he always notices and starts with his, “I NEED…” chant that I can not deal with a sleep time. Hope the kid grows out of it soon. I'm afraid he will lose one and then what will we do?

I haven't checked eBay, but I am not too hopeful that we could find
him there. I don't even remember what brand he was. And to make it
worse, I FOUND him at a thrift store years ago. :(

I am loving all of the names of #3's pals. I can just picture him
snuggled with his montourage. Yes, the threat of losing one of those
precious toys is a real one. And scary!

Oh poor little guy. My son is the same way about his blanky he has had since birth. He is 9 and still freaks out if he can't find it at night to go to sleep.

    That. Breaks. My. Heart.

    Poor Twizzler… poor Doug.

When my daughter was born, I made for her a blankey/lovey she now sleeps with. I made three for this reason.

I hope Doug finds his way back to Twizzler soon!

Making a loveys is perfect…because you have a little more control.
My problem has always been that I never know what will be the special
blanket or toy until it's too late and no longer available.

Aww, that's sad. I can remember when my mom substituted my security object, a ball of pink yarn that I had pulled and tugged on for a very long period of time and managed to turn into a solid mass with loops to hold and play with. I loved Pinky. I lost Pinky, when I was about 6, and I was so beside myself that my mother attempted to make for me. It wasn't the same, but it was better than nothing for a while. And eventually Pinky turned up. I sure hope that Doug turns up, soon!

My son has a very similar dog named Ralphie. He went missing for a while and then we found him. He feel in love with him all over again. I HATE loosing things too. I thought I had lost one of my favorite cook books. I was in a panic searching the entire house calling friends and neighbors trying to see if I left it somewhere I even called a friend for a recipe from it because I wanted it for dinner last night. Then at scrapbooking last night my next door neighbor yells out oh my I still have your cookbook. I almost lost it!! I had completely forgot I loaned it to her. Did you loan Doug out to someone?? And your lens oh I hope you find that soon!!
