This weekend, I taught 40 kids and a handful of adults how to make buttercream frosting. And I gave them a few tips for photographing food. It was So. Much. Fun.

Plus, we got to eat cupcakes and lick our fingers.

Earlier in the week, I made cupcakes with my kids so that I could do a little dry run (and make sure I could show kids how to frost a cupcake. Eek!). And since the cupcakes were red velvet, I HAD to make cream cheese frosting to top them.

I’ve never seen cupcakes disappear so fast.

If you’ve never made homemade frosting before, read my post about how to make the perfect birthday cake. Frosting is one of the easiest things to make in the world and it’s SO worth it. You’ll never want to eat the canned stuff again.

This is my kids’ favorite frosting and it pairs perfectly with red velvet cake, spice cake, carrot cake, and cinnamon rolls. Enjoy!

  2. I liked the taste, super easy to make, I did make one substitution, used 1/2 tsp vanilla & 1/2 tsp. almond extract. The recipe barely covered a 9′ two layer cake.

  3. I made these, they were a hit!! I’m not sure if I did it right. They were a little sweet, so maybe I might try to add a pinch of salt to make it a little more cream cheese taste?

J, you could totally try adding a pinch of salt! No harm in that for sure! I’m sure it’s just a matter of “taste.” “)
