My crafty friend, Lisa, is at it again! I am constantly amazed by the clever and easy craft ideas that she sends my way. Not only did she send me a fun tutorial for making a DIY clay pendant (with an antiqued look that I love!), but she gave me the finished pendant to keep.

I was at Michaels yesterday picking up some clay for one daughter’s middle school project and some stuffing for a pillow that another daughter crocheted over the weekend, and I spent several minutes looking at the different colors of sculpey clay and imagining all of the things I could make. I never guessed that it could be so easy to make something so beautiful (and honestly, so not-homemade-looking!) with clay.

Supplies

Here’s what you need to get started:

1-

  • Sculpey clay (polymer oven-bake clay)
  • Cord for necklace
  • Items to “stamp” on your clay
  • Brown acrylic paint and paint brush
  • Damp cloth
  • Oven

How to Design Your Own Antiqued Clay Pendant

Look around the house for some fun possibilities to “stamp” on the clay. A drawer handle, a button, ornate key, etc…

2-

Roll Sculpey into a ball. This one is just under an inch.

3-

With a bowl or plate, squish the ball down flat. The more pressure you use, the flatter it will be.

4-

If it isn’t all thin as you want it, press again then carefully pull it off the bottom.

Press item you want to “stamp” onto pendant gently onto the clay.

6-

10-

For the embossing template, I used a stylus to help push down on the small sections. Careful! Sometimes the point slips off. The good news is that you can start all over again if you mess up!

Punch a hole on the top before baking.

11-

Read the directions of the back of the box for cooking temps and time.

13-

After the pendant has baked and cooled, cover the top with brown paint.

12-

14-

Before it dries, wipe off the paint with a damp cloth.

16-

Tie on cord.

Wear with pride!

That’s it! Don’t you love how simple that is? What design would you like to make on a clay pendant like this?
